To begin, what better designer to illustrate my point than Calvin Klein.
Although the company almost faced bankruptcy in 1992, Calvin Klein managed to regain and increase the profitability of his empire throughout the later 90s, mainly through the success of its highly popular underwear and fragrance lines, as well as the ck sportswear line.(courtesy Wikipedia)
The 70's brought us disco, and denim - thanks to Calvin Klein. With Brooke Shields as his muse, he made us ask the pivotal question: What's between me and my Calvin's? - To which, her answer, brilliantly, was 'nothing.'
In the years to follow:
- criticism over Kate Moss and the 'coc-chic' push of the ads
- the infamous Kate Moss and Mark Wahlberg ads
- Obsession cologne ads - who hasn't owned Obsession?! The bottle itself is identifiable without a label!
- The 'kiddy-porn' ads to which Then-President Bill Clinton was highly against!
The creation of the monogram label- CK.
He made underwear, outer-wear....in saying, underwear became, itself, "a fashion statement."
